Welcome to Equity, Diversity, and Excellence Initiative Website

In 2013, the ADVANCE Professors developed the Equity, Diversity and Excellence Initiative (EDEI) to focus our efforts on inclusion, equity and diversity throughout the campus. The ADVANCE Equity, Diversity, and Excellence Initiative (EDEI) recognizes that hiring and retaining a world-class faculty requires fostering a diverse pool of talent; creating an inclusive and equitable work climate; and supporting the career growth of existing faculty at all levels so they can achieve their highest career aspirations at Georgia Tech. The full EDEI can be found here. One component of the EDEI was our commitment to develop an interactive website and to consolidate resources that can be beneficial to many constituents across the campus.

The first step in addressing diversity is recognizing our own personal bias. We recommend that everyone involved in faculty or student evaluations start by taking the Implicit Test developed at Harvard. You will most likely be surprised at the results!

We also recommend reading the PNAS article Groups of diverse problem solvers can outperform groups of high-ability problem solvers which argues why diversity and inclusion is in all of our best interests.

You will find here a wealth of resources and information on a range of topics, such as Bias Awareness, Mentoring, and Best Practices for Search Committees, Promotion, and Retention.

The ADVANCE Professors and the members of the Office of Institute Diversity are available to help in these efforts. Dr. Julie Ancis, Associate VP for Institute Diversity, will provide support as a central liaison to share best practices and is available to consult with faculty on diversity and equity issues (jancis@vpid.gatech.edu).

We hope that this website proves to be a useful resource to you and welcome feedback as we continue to improve upon it!

“We will recruit, develop, retain, and engage a diverse cadre of students, faculty, and staff with a wide variety of background, perspectives, interests, and talents, creating a campus community that exemplifies the best in all of us—in our intellectual pursuits, our diversity of thought, our personal integrity, and our inclusive excellence.”
